Daily Dispatch journalists Bongani Fuzile and Sino Majangaza have been recognised for the work they did while criss-crossing the province to report on sewage problems affecting many residents and businesses.
Their multimedia investigative project, 'Stinking Truth', won a national accolade at the SAB Environmental Media awards held in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
As a result of their reporting, many of the problem areas identified have since been addressed by authorities.
“We are gratified to hear that two of our journalists have been recognised for their work at the SAB Environmental Media awards,” Daily Dispatch GM Ryan Megaw said.
“Both have previously won multiple awards for their investigative work and again delivered the excellence for which they are known.
“Their investigation cast light on the decaying water and sanitation infrastructure in the province, and the resulting environmental and health crisis, with in-depth coverage and pictures.
“The many hours of hard, often smelly work has also borne fruit other than awards in that in several instances action has been taken by the authorities to correct the problems they highlighted,” Megaw said.
Daily Dispatch editor Chiara Carter said she was delighted that the paper’s newsroom continued to produce award-winning journalism that ensured the province remained high on the national agenda.
Carter said the reporters’ series of reports exposed the shocking state of waste water management in many parts of the Eastern Cape.
“This is a demonstration of our commitment to ensure Dispatch readers enjoy quality journalism that matters.”
